The effective range of an AR 15 is 400-600 meters which is about 650 yards on the high end.  Many weapons can do that.  Plus, that is a function of the ammo as well . A weapon like my Henry 45 could, in the right hands, do this: Even today, many shooters like to compete with the .45/70 in long-range...
