  Simple definitions.

An assault rifle is a precise military term that defines that it must have:
A select fire feature that allows fully automatic fire alongside semi auto.
Uses an intermediate cartridge. 0 to 400 yard range. More powerful than a hand gun but less than a high powered rifle. 0 to 1,000 yard range.
  Has a detachable magazine.
 Think  M 16

An assault weapon is a political or legal term used to describe weapons that may cosmetically resemble assault rifles but are only semi automatic fire. It's used by anti gun advocates to confuse and blur the line so Joe Schmo might think it's something it really isn't.
  Think AR 15

Although both look similar the difference is in their firing capability.  An M16 can do everything an AR 15 can do but also has select fire.
The AR 15 came before the M16 and was the basis for the M16. The AR 15 can be made to simulate automatic fire with parts such as a forced reset trigger, bump stock or a binary trigger. Those options aren't as reliable as the M16s fully automatic fire and really aren't recommended for combat.

So...... by definition a tricked out Ruger 10/22 with plastic furniture and 25 round magazine could be considered  an assault weapon but not an assault rifle.

The debate here is whether the AR 15 is an assault rifle. It isn't. It's a regular semi auto rifle that looks like an assault rifle. Its an assault weapon. Which as has been stated is just a political or legal term.
Most parts will interchange between an M16 and an AR 15 but the AR 15 can't be made into an M16 by doing that. It isn't made to accept the select fire capability.

For me an assault rifle is something I wished I could buy at the LGS but can't because it's for military use only. An assault weapon could really mean anything from rock ro a club to a knife to a shotgun if it's used to harm someone. You're really putting an assault on them when the old shotgun comes into play.

If anyone has anything constructive to add please feel free.
If you feel like trolling fine. All you'll get from me is this,**** off.

I don't know if this counts as trolling. It might, since it is not directly pertinent to the issue being raised by the OP. But that bolded paragraph?

That bolded paragraph brought to mind another hot topic of debate on this board and in this society. One does not make a woman by altering a man. Or a man by altering a woman. The parts may be interchangeable, but the nature of a thing is immutable.

Great analogy. Both look alike but one carries more punch. I've never thought of comparing them to other things.

No you don't see much in the way of gun fighting in Ukraine but it's there.

As for needing a weapon at the store have you seen what goes on? There's already people getting killed in those places.

Yes America is gun hungry. Sales have leveled off for the most part but they are still in demand.

I give the MAGA half of the citizen militia a little latitude. I believe only a very small fraction of them are lunatics that would actually want to participate in shooting other Americans. There isn't enough of them to do any damage and the rest of us,the other MAGA people included would put them.down fast.

I like to use the Ford Mustang.  A showroom floor Mustang compared to the NASCAR Cup Mustang.  Look the same but oh, that performance.

We had 800 young people descend in a raving party on our small town suppposedly.  Gun fire was heard.  These large crowds are becoming a thing everywhere.
We also had two shootings last weekend. One that killed a young child on a drive by shooting from the street in the home. Another resultd in a flight to Shock/Trauma for a young adult male.  This kind of news is somewhat rare around here.

Aye, Trump is cranking up the crazy knob.  I guess I'll try for the shotgun again.  I have a 30 years ago bust for 2g of pot and was evidently disqualified in the Obama era.  I think I was still even registered democrat. I never got word of  a yes or a no.

Met an interesting bloke you would like at the neighborhood bar.  He said dad gave him 3 shells to go and hunt.  If he came home with less than three meals for the families he said his dad kicked hs ***.  He learned to target quick, and evidently went to become a star Marine Sharpshooter / Sniper.. Really nice guy.  He was totally in alignment that Trump has screwed the pooch.

Edit for character count

Just to add to your great explanation:The U.S. Army defines assault rifles as "short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges."[17] In this strict definition, a firearm must have at least the following characteristics to be considered an assault rifle:[2][3][4] Rifles that meet most of these criteria, but not all, are not assault rifles according to the U.S. Army's definition. For example:
  • Select-fire rifles such as the FN FALM14, and H&K G3 main battle rifles are not assault rifles; they fire full-powered rifle cartridges.
  • Semi-automatic-only rifles like the Colt AR-15 are not assault rifles; they do not have select-fire capabilities.
  • Semi-automatic-only rifles with fixed magazines like the SKS are not assault rifles; they do not have detachable box magazines and are not capable of automatic fire.

This is nonsense.

The "civilian" AR-15 is a variant of the original AR-15 design, modified so as not to be a machine gun subject to the 1934 regs.

It doesn't "look" like an assault rifle...it is one.

This terminology debate is irrelevant. The AR-15's design and development predates the etymological discussion. The antecedent is German.
